Why now

Elections BC's fixed-date law lets an election come early if the government decides to call one or loses the confidence of the Legislative Assembly (Elections BC). Eby cited the trade war with the United States, calling it an “existential” issue for BC that voters should have a say on (iNFOnews).

At the 2024 general election (October 19, 2024) the NDP won 47 of 93 seats, a one-seat majority (results summary). The Conservative caucus split in 2026 and Kerry-Lynne Findlay resigned as leader on September 20. Seven CentreBC MLAs, including Peter Milobar, rejoined the Conservatives on September 22 (Global News). See current party leaders and the 2024 results.
